Is a Projector a Good Gift? A Canadian Holiday Checklist

A projector can be a memorable gift. It turns a blank wall into a movie night, a game day or a backyard screening when the weather turns. It still has to suit the habits of the person who receives it. A few quick checks before you buy help you choose a model that fits how they like to watch.

Who a projector suits

A projector tends to make sense for someone who:

  • Has a wall but not much room for a big TV, like a student, someone in a condo or a small apartment, or a family with a basement rec room.
  • Likes hosting, whether that's movie nights, sports with friends or sleepovers.
  • Moves around, since a compact projector can go from the living room to the bedroom to a cabin.
  • Already streams from a phone or laptop, so they have something to watch on day one.

If the person you have in mind watches mostly in bright daylight, or wants a screen they never have to think about, a projector might not be the right fit. That's worth a quiet question before you buy.

Check 1: Where will it go?

Picture size depends on how far the projector sits from the wall. Before you buy, it helps to know roughly which room it's for and how much space is in front of the wall. Our room-fit guide walks through the three measurements that matter, and our small-room setup guide covers tight spaces like bedrooms and condos. Buying for a student? The dorm room setup guide is a good one to send along with the gift.

Check 2: What will they watch, and how?

Think about what they'll plug in or connect:

  • Phone or tablet: many projectors support screen mirroring over Wi-Fi, and some connect by cable. Our guide to connecting a phone to a projector explains both routes and what to check first.
  • Laptop, game console or streaming stick: look for an HDMI port.
  • Streaming apps: app support varies by model, so check the product listing for exactly which apps and services it supports before you buy. If you're unsure, a streaming stick plugged into HDMI is a simple backup.

Check 3: Sound

Built-in speakers are handy for casual viewing. For movie nights with a group, many people like to add a speaker. If the projector has Bluetooth, a wireless speaker they already own may work with it; check the model's compatibility and settings first.

Check 4: Screen or wall?

A smooth, light-coloured wall works for plenty of setups, so a screen isn't a must on day one. A screen does give a flatter, more even surface. Our screen vs wall guide explains when each makes sense, which helps if you're deciding whether to bundle one in.

Check 5: Easy setup

Setup features can make the first night easier. Check what each model actually offers:

  • Keystone correction, which can help adjust the picture's shape when the projector sits at an angle; check the model's limits.
  • Focus type: autofocus adjusts on its own; electric focus, on models that offer it, is adjusted with the remote; and manual focus is adjusted by hand. Check which one the model has.
  • A compact size, so it can sit on a stable shelf, table or nightstand with room around the vents.

Our Mark I lists auto keystone, electric focus, screen mirroring, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, plus HDMI, USB and AV ports, in a compact body. If the picture ever looks soft at the edges, our blurry corners guide covers the quick fixes.

Gift-wrapping tips that help

  • Add an HDMI cable or a streaming stick if their projector will connect to a TV box or laptop.
  • Include a note with a first-movie suggestion to get the first night started.
  • Charge or test anything with a battery (remotes, speakers) before you wrap it.
  • Keep the receipt and packaging in case it needs to be swapped. Check the store's current policy at checkout.

Quick gift checklist

  1. They have a wall and a room in mind.
  2. You know what they'll connect (phone, laptop, console, streaming stick).
  3. Sound plan: built-in, or a Bluetooth speaker.
  4. Wall is fine to start, screen optional.
  5. Setup features: keystone correction and the model's focus type.
